Is transparency a huge issue in the D.C. government?

No one would know about multiple DC Police Officers being investigated for illegal PPP loans unless the media kept asking questions. The 7News I-Team did just that in March of this year, and nothing was revealed by MPD.

As of Monday, 7News now knows multiple officers are being investigated for the same PPP scam we asked about weeks ago:

DC Police told 7News Monday:

"MPD’s Internal Affairs Division is currently investigating allegations involving several members related to fraudulent PPP loans. While MPD does not comment on ongoing internal investigations, we can confirm that, at this time, no member connected to these current investigations has been terminated."

In March, former MPD officer Kalynn Fields pled guilty to wire fraud after stealing $35,000 in COVID-19 assistance loans from the federal government. She will be sentenced later this year and faces up to 20 years in prison.

Last year, Owen Grigsby, a former MPD patrol officer, pled guilty to filing false and misleading information in order to fraudulently obtain Economic Injury Disaster Loans and Paycheck Protection Program loans.

Grigsby was sentenced to two years of probation and has already paid back more than $41,000.
