A late-season cold snap will bring the risk of frost for parts of the DMV, prompting a FROST ALERT starting Wednesday evening. You may want to consider bringing any potted plants inside or covering any flowers or plants in the garden to protect them from damage.

The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for counties along and west of I-95 from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. Thursday. Low temperatures will fall between 34 to 37 degrees.

A Freeze Warning is in effect for Page, Shenandoah, Augusta, and Rockingham counties for temperatures as low as 28 degrees. Lighter winds are expected overnight with clear skies, so conditions are ideal for the development of frost.

While air temperatures will remain above freezing, the ground and surfaces like grass, the hood or windshield of your car, your roof, etc., can fall to 32 degrees.

When the air temperature cools to the dew point temperature, there are enough water molecules in the air to freeze on those cold surfaces, causing ice crystals to form.

Warmer weather is expected after the cold start Thursday morning, with a major warm-up in store for the weekend!
