Joshua Chapin

Anchor/Reporter

Josh joined the 7News team in November 2024 as an anchor and reporter and is thrilled to be in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region sharing stories that matter to the community.

Before joining 7News, Josh spent six and half years with WTVD, ABC 11 Eyewitness News in Raleigh-Durham, a city familiar to him from his days at Duke University.

Josh was the first reporter to witness the toppling of a Confederate statue at UNC Chapel Hill. He followed the days of turmoil afterward including violent protests, as well as the upheaval following the death of George Floyd, a native son of North Carolina.

As an investigative reporter, he dug into the roots of the ongoing gun violence crisis in Durham. He interviewed victims, survivors, and families of young children lost in the crossfire. He pursued solutions to the crime problems plaguing Bull City by traveling to Winston-Salem and Greensboro to investigate their successful approach to preventing violence. One of his investigative reports on a fatal DUI accident led to sanctions for three UNC football players.

Josh was also on the front lines of both the national and local elections in 2024 with the spotlight on North Carolina as a critical swing state. He interviewed former Vice President Mike Pence one-on-one as a presidential candidate. He covered rallies for President Donald Trump as well as other presidential candidates.

A passionate sports fan, Josh covered the Carolina Hurricanes playoff runs and a host of “Tobacco Road” NCAA basketball games including the improbable Duke-UNC Final Four match-up in New Orleans. Ultimately, his Blue Devils could not come out on top.

Before North Carolina, Josh was a reporter in Houston at KHOU 11 News, a CBS affiliate. He was on the ground when Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017 and he covered the aftermath. Following his zeal for sports, he was assigned the Astros' first World Series victory that same year as well as the Super Bowl, Final Four, and the world-famous Houston Rodeo.

Josh spent two years as a reporter and fill-in anchor at WVIT, the NBC O&O in Hartford, Connecticut in their New Haven office. Josh was part of a Peabody Award-winning team for its 2012 coverage of the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary. In 2013, Josh spent a week covering the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Josh started his career in cable television news at News 12 The Bronx and Brooklyn. He started as a freelancer on the assignment desk and finished his time there as the station’s weekend anchor and lead reporter. He cut his reporting teeth as a one-man band covering inner-city crime in some of the most dangerous local communities.

Josh was born and raised in New York City. A graduate of Duke University with a degree in Classics and a Minor in Media Policy, he also received a Master’s in Journalism from Quinnipiac University while working full-time.

When he is not reporting, he loves to travel, play golf, listen to live music, watch all kinds of sports, and solve at least one crossword puzzle a day.
