Pierce County Asset Building Coalition Activities

  1. EITC Outreach and free tax prep. Annually recruit, train, and deploy volunteer tax preparers to assist taxpayers in capturing all tax credits for which they are eligible. Provide social service organizations with the tools they need to assist taxpayers to file their own returns using www.icanefile.org. Maintain capacity to continue education about tax credits and free filing services for taxpayers to continue filing outside the parameters of tax season.
  2. Individual Development Account programs sponsored by Associated Ministries and Tacoma Housing Authority, offering a matched savings and education program to homeownership, small business development, post-secondary education and ownership of a vehicle, computer or adaptive equipment to pursue employment or education.
  3. A comprehensive financial education program offered by Tacoma Goodwill Industries and workshops throughout the year by members.
  4. HUD-approved housing counseling offered by South Sound Outreach Services and Foreclosure Intervention Workshops throughout the year by members.
  5. Work with area financial institutions to promote a year-round "Pierce County Saves" campaign and connect this work with Bank on Washington in 2012.
  6. Develop a Speakers' Bureau of presenters and workshop resources that can support community groups with financial education, a strategic overview of asset-building, asset protection, and other topics.
  7. Compile a comprehensive list of services offered by member organizations and use the network to make it easier for consumers to access services.
  8. Establish a means of evaluating the effectiveness of asset building initiatives, programs and collecting outcome data to demonstrate the impact of the work we do for individuals, households and our communities of Pierce County.
  9. Capacity-building, such as financial coaching training, and an expanded network across the state through WABC membership.
