Traffic advisory, metro update for DC's Cherry Blossom 10-mile run on Sunday

Though peak bloom for the cherry blossoms happened last weekend, there is still a lot of cherry blossom-related events happening in D.C. this weekend, including the 10-mile run on Sunday.

The Cherry Blossom 10-mile run, which starts at 7:30 a.m., will impact traffic, parking and metro operations.

The following streets will be closed by D.C. Police to vehicle traffic from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday:

  • 1200 block of Maine Avenue, SW
  • Maine Avenue from I-395 westbound to Independence Avenue, SW
  • Theodore Roosevelt Bridge Ramp to Ohio Drive, NW
  • 9th Street Tunnel ramp to Maine Avenue, SW
  • Virginia Avenue from 27th Street to Rock Creek Parkway, NW
  • I Street from 27th Street to Rock Creek Parkway, NW

The following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic by the U.S. Park Police from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Sunday:

  • Ohio Drive from 23rd Street to East Basin Drive, SW
  • Independence Avenue from 14th Street to 23rd Street, SW
  • Rock Creek Parkway from Ohio Drive to Virginia Avenue, NW
  • East and West Potomac Parks
  • East Basin Drive, SW
  • Raoul Wallenberg Place from 15th Street to Maine Avenue, SW
  • Ramp from Memorial Circle to Ohio Drive, SW
  • Homefront Drive, SW
  • Daniel Chester French Drive from Independence Avenue to Lincoln Memorial Circle, SW
  • Maine Avenue at ramp from East Basin Drive to Independence Avenue, SW
  • 17th Street from Constitution Avenue, NW to Independence Avenue, SW
  • Parkway Drive, NW from Lincoln Memorial Circle to Rock Creek Parkway
  • 15th Street from Constitution Avenue, NW to Independence Avenue, SW
  • Madison Drive from 14th Street to 15th Street, NW
  • Jefferson Drive from 14th Street to 15th Street, SW

D.C.’s Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday and lines will run as normal, despite the early start time.

Attendees of the run can arrive closer to the starting line by taking the blue, orange and silver lines to the Smithsonian, Federal Triangle, or L’Enfant Plaza metro stations, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

WMATA warned that the Smithsonian station may have crowds, and that the Federal Triangle station is a 12-minute walk to the start line and the L’Enfant Plaza a 19-minute walk.

The race is expected to draw more than 17,000 runners, along with thousands more coming to spectate this spring event.
