WASHINGTON (7News) — The football season clock is winding down across the Washington, D.C. region.
D.C. wrapped up its year on Saturday, crowning a new champion. Meanwhile, Virginia teams fought to punch their tickets to state title games which will take place next weekend.
James Madison heading to Harrisonburg
The Warhawks are in the driver's seat to bring their first state title back to Fairfax County. Madison defeated Lake Braddock in the semifinal matchup in the Virginia Class 6 ranks, 42-19, on Saturday afternoon in Vienna.
It was all Warhawks from the jump as the team was able to get off to a 21-0 lead at the half. The Bruins garnered some momentum in the second, but Madison had every answer.
The offense and defense played complementary football from start to finish, and as a result, the team is now just one win away from a state title. Madison will play Oscar Smith in Harrisonburg next weekend.
Dunbar exacts revenge for last year's title loss
After entering the second half of the DCSAA Class AA title game with a 7-6 lead, Dunbar was able to open things up in a big way down the stretch. The Crimson Tide held Friendship Collegiate Academy scoreless in the second half to go on to win 27-6. A big moment came when Dunbar's Samar Robinson picked up a Knights' fumble and rushed 81 yards for the 'scoop and score.'
After that, quarterback Brosnan Dukes added another score with his own rushing touchdown. It was a season to remember for the Crimson Tide, who also won this year's Turkey Bowl.
Briar Woods partying like it's 2013
The Falcons have had a history with their semifinal opponent, L.C. Bird.
In 2013, Briar Woods fell in the Virginia Class 5 Championship. In 2024, the Falcons got some payback against the Skyhawks, thanks, in part, to Brady Carmical. The Falcons senior quarterback scored four total touchdowns (two rushing, two passing). After missing much of the season with a broken foot, senior wideout Anthony Joyce had two touchdown receptions.
Carmical, a Naval Academy commit, surpassed over 3,200 total yards this season. Briar Woods is looking for its first title since winning back-to-back championships in 2008 and 2009.
